Godspeed You! Black Emperor! - F#A#infinity (1997)

Now this album is different there is no getting around that.  However the weight it carries is awesome.

Koloss - End Of Chayot (2011)

Yo everyone, sorry it's been such a long time, why is life always so fucking busy eh? Anyway first post is Koloss, a sludge/doom band from Svetlanda, Sweden. Short but great debut album.

'Heavy, dark tones and beautiful, melancholic and melodic passages is what defines the sound of KOLOSS. The lyrics are often portraying an apocalyptic world. The vision is the future and the message is that change is necessary.'

great documentary about the recording aswell;

Hooded Eagle - EP

Got some sweet shit here.  Sludge metal from South Carolina, US.  Had these couple of songs on loop for the last couple of days, awesome pulverizing sludge.  Pick this one up quick.

Also please support the band by ordering their 7 inch of the new songs and by checking out their myspace;

Sunn O))) - White2 (2004)

This is an interesting one.  Thick Doom/Drone from Duo Sunn O))).  On my first listen I was not hugely impressed to say the least but slowly I've found myself going back to Sunn O))), again and again.  Maybe you'll like it maybe you won't, but hey give it a listen atleast.

Russian Circles - Station (2008)

Station by Chicago's three piece, Russian Circles is not another album to be stamped by the ever crushing 'Post Rock' genre tag.
An instrumental album with huge songs that rise and fall, some great work on guitar and bass, however the highlight of the album is Dave Turncrantz, the drummer.  Really original and creative drum work which is great to see, in what is slowly becoming a slightly 'stale' style of music throughout the music community.
Sick stuff

Rosetta - The Galilean Satellites (2005)

Really great album, two sepearate CDs from Rosetta, a post metal outfit. One, crushingly heavy, the other consiting of amazing soundscapes. When played together the CD's simultaneously create some of the most interesting and engergetic sounds to date. Great concept, great album.

Departe

This video is the same song but mixed with its ambient counterpart. Awesome.

Weedeater - God Luck and Good Speed (2007)

Hello!

I'm back and have been listening to plenty of music to share with you guys.
The first is 'God Luck and Good Speed' a great album by Weedeater from North Carolina.  This is true Southern, angry rock. Enjoy

That is what a bowl full of weed does to your leg
Great video.

Ulver - Shadows Of The Sun (2007)

As you can see from the backdrop I am a huge fan of Ulver and Shadows of The Sun is one of their best.

This album takes time and a few listens to get into, but stick with it because this album has quickly become one of my all time favourites and contains some fantastic tracks .  Very dark and melancholic but soothing at the same time and some of the best album art I've ever seen.

Take it easy and enjoy.

Cult Of Luna - Eternal Kingdom (2008)

Fucking intense album.

'Ghost Trail' Excerpt from the DVD 'Fire Was Born'

High on Fire - Death Is This Communion (2007)

Fourth full-length from California's, High On Fire.  Led by Mike Pike, formerly of the legendary Sleep, these guys play thundering sludge/stoner metal with thick riffs and slicing guitar solos. What more could you possibly want?

Grails - Black Tar Prophecies Vol's 1, 2, & 3 (2006)

Some of the best stoner/psychadelic music I've heard for a long time.  Rock, jazz, free-form freakouts, droning soundscapes, plodding dubbed-up and out bass, they are all here giving the record a great '60s and '70s feel . Dark and amazing, absolutely beautiful music.

Tuesday 19 April 2011

Alcest - Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde (2007)

This is an incredible Shoegaze/Post Rock/Black Metal album from France's, Alcest.  The project is led by a guy called Neige who creates beautiful music which draws influences from many genres.  Fans of Black or Downbeat Metal this is a album you should definitely have a listen to.

Callisto - Noir (2006)

When I first starting listening to Post-Metal and Sludge,it all began with Callisto.  The Finnish Sextet's second album Noir contains influences of progressive, ambient, sludge, jazz and many others and as a result is one of my favourites.  Fans of ISIS etc should dig this shit.

Jack And The Bearded Fisherman - Places To Hide (2011)

I know this has featured on Stonerobixx's Blog recently but I couldnt resist.  A great stoner rock/sludge album from some dudes in France, definately worth a play through.
'Taking into their itinery the neanderthal blues, they will cross through troubled waters and musical fury. They will navigate between melody and impatience, skirting still pools of tension and waves of explosion…'

BoC / Quiet Lakes - Missing Endings (Split) (2011)

Just got sent this one to review a few days ago and I'm really impressed.  The album starts with Breakfast of Champions a Tokyo based band playing metal and rock n roll with some great Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) style vocals, the riffs fucking kick ass.  This then leads into  Quiet Ocean from Ontorio, an awesome display of bleak soundscapes, showing influences of Drone/Post Doom/Post Rock.  Well worth downloading and listening and I wish the two groups all the best. Drone on.

Song Picks:
Master Blaster
Cracked Lips

Hull - Sole Lord (2009)

Sole Lord is fucking epic. Doom/Stoner/Post-metal from Brooklyn NY

It's a shit video in comparison to the album but should give you a flavour of HULL

Monday 4 April 2011

Nadja - Touched (2007)

'The duo combines soundscape, electronics and atmospheric vocals with slow, epic riffs and dirge-like percussion, creating a slowly moving grand wall of music that has been described as drone, ambient-doom, and shoegazer-metal. Aidan noted that they prefer to call their style of music "ambient metal" or "ambient doom", though he's fond of the term "dreamsludge" as well.'

Great duo consisting of Aiden Baker and Leah Buckareff from Toronto, Canada, worth a listen.

Song Pick:
 Stays Demons
Flowers of Flesh

Sleep - Holy Mountain (1992)

Sleep are a band of somewhat cult status now, and it's mostly thanks to this monstrously heavy riff onslaught, and of course their 60+ minute journey 'Dopesmoker'.  Both are great albums and symbolise the beginning of much of the great stoner and doom we listen to today.

Holy Mountain

Dopesmoker

Old Man Gloom - Christmas (2004)

Sludge/doom metal/post-metal from Massachusetts.  Formed by Aaron Turner of ISIS and various members of Zozobra and Converge the band fucking rocks, simple as that.  Full of great ambient parts that lead straight into brutal sludge making it one of my current favourite albums.

Song Picks:
Volcano
Gift
Skullstorm

Bossk -.1 (2006)

I would suggest Bossk are Britain's answer to ISIS. Awesome music from Ashford, UK. Took a few listens but was well worth it, great guitar work and the songs open out into epic stories.  .1 is the first of the Bossk trilogy before they disbanded in 2008.  Great music and great album cover

Tuesday 15 March 2011

Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain (2006) & The Mantle (2002)

Atmospheric blackened doom with amazing post-whatever touches from Portland, Oregon, USA.  Really great albums, start with The Mantle which has a more folk metal/post rock feel to it, then move onto Ashes Against The Grain for the full Agalloch experience. Enjoy
